ELIGIBILITY + ARTIST SELECTION:

We welcome applications from artists at all career stages, income levels, and geographic locations. We primarily seek applications from visual artists (painters, sculptors, installation artists, photographers, video/new media artists, fiber artists, printmakers, etc.) and writers in all literary disciplines. We discourage applications from dancers, musicians, and other performers because our studios are only well suited for artists who work quietly (nothing is sound-proofed) and who don't require space for rehearsal / movement arts. Groups/collectives may apply to work on joint projects in the visual and literary arts. The studios have light-duty ventilation, so an art practice generating strong fumes cannot be accommodated.

Submissions are reviewed by a diverse, rotating jury. Scoring is based on the quality of work, the strength of the proposed goals for the residency, as well as on the jurors’ judgment about how much this opportunity would benefit the applicant and their goals. Our selection rubric takes equity factors into consideration in order to better support those marginalized within arts institutions/ opportunities. Within the application, artists have the option to describe any equity factors the jurors should take into consideration. This may include considerations of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, status as a care-giver, veteran, immigration status, overall financial needs, and lack of access to formal art education. We recognize that racism and racial inequality pervade the cultural sector, our local community, and the world at large.

2025 Funded Residency In Western Australia

Located on an ancient, ever-changing piece of land that inspires awe and artistry, The Farm Margaret River offers immersion in the sublime. It is both a working rural property and a home to artist studios — a place to make, explore, examine and restore.

The Farm sits amid the ancient and diverse flora of Western Australia’s South West region, an ecologically significant place of sacred caves, rugged coastline and monumental karri forests. This is the ancestral Country of the Wardandi people, a cultural group of the Noongar nation who have lived on and from this land, the rivers that run through it and the ocean it meets in harmony for tens of thousands of years.

Here, we seek to engage with and learn from our natural environment through experimental practices, creative inquiry and visual languages. We host artistic collaborations, exhibitions and funded residency programs that invite local and global artists to produce and share new works responding to this unique landscape.

The Farm comprises several studios and a workshop, providing access to both agricultural farming land and natural bushlands. Our farm enjoys rich, mineral-dense soils and is home to diverse flora and fauna. An artesian spring feeds a dam and tributary that flows to the ocean. Waves can be heard crashing along the isolated beaches nearby, and witnessed from walking tracks that wind along coastal cliffs.

Our residency program is an opportunity to experience this place and contribute to our ongoing collective learning. As nature informs our artists, our artists inform us. Together we pursue a deeper understanding of our environment and our role within it.

August 24 - 28, 2024, Hollyhock Retreats, Canada

This alternative photography workshop focuses on the historical Cyanotype photo process, using objects and plants from the Hollyhock ecosystem to create one-of-a-kind images on fabric. Participants will learn how to create Cyanotype prints on fabric and will be encouraged to use natural elements from the Hollyhock ecosystem to create photograms. A photogram is a photographic technique that uses objects as ‘negatives’, and that allows the print to be created in situ with available materials. Cyanotype prints will then be toned with dye plants from the Hollyhock garden. Both processes invite engagement with the ecosystem of Cortes Island and embrace serendipity and collaboration with natural materials.
